November Topic: Grading Systems & Student Motivation
As we reach the middle of the term, it's a natural moment to reflect on how our assessments are influencing student engagement and stress levels. In a recent Teaching in Higher Ed podcast episode, Daniel Guberman explores the connection between our grading systems and student motivation through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (focusing on autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Together, we’ll chat about alternative grading and the psychological side of assessment, from how student agency can sometimes trigger anxiety rather than empowerment, to how assessment design impacts our own motivation as educators. The podcast is also available through Apple podcasts.

Listen to the Teaching in Higher Ed episode: How Our Grading Systems Impact Student Motivation (~44 minutes) and let’s meet on Monday November 9th.
